A girl named Clara thinks she will be having a sad, unremarkable Christmas, when she is given a Nutcracker doll as a gift. Much to her surprise, her living room is taken over that night by giant mice, and her doll becomes life-size. He engages in an epic battle with the Rat King. After the battle, he transforms into a handsome Cavalier, who explains that he had been put under a curse, and her bravery saved him. He invites her to the Kingdom of Sweets, where she will receive a spectacular reception. Clara agrees, and they travel through the Land of Snow on their way, where snowflakes dance, and the Snow Queen wishes them well.
In the Kingdom of Sweets, Clara meets the Sugarplum Fairy, and many other delightful candies dance for her! Clara joins a garden of colorful flowers for a dance, and the Sugarplum Fairy and her Cavalier dance a beautiful pas de deux. Clara is sent back home to Christmas morning, with a promise that her new friends will always welcome her.
